In the 90s, my parent's friends gifted us a few bonds, and I legit didn't understand. But now I'm an adult, and I...still don't understand bonds? But, in hindsight, I'm grateful they cared about my financial future. Nowadays, around birthdays and holidays, if we know our family friends have an open 529 Account for their kid, we ask for the UGift code to contribute. A gift is a gift--this one just happens to be tucked away in a piggybank that our kids can't access for a little while...
For anyone looking to share their kids' code with friends:
Log on to your Direct Plan account and select the Ugift link.
On the Ugift page, you’ll get a unique Ugift code for your account.
Give this code to friends and family over the phone, in person, through email, on social networks, or on printed invitations.
Gift-givers can go to Ugift529.com to enter the code, their name, and the gift amount. They can choose to make their gift electronically or by check.
I also recently researched the difference between 530As and 529s, so sharing a snippet of that info here because I love to make heads spin, baby.
